Because I only have a mouse to paint weights with, I wrote this tool to make things quicker and easier on myself. Uses PyQt; a PySide version shall be added soon. To launch it: paste the following below into a python scipt editor inside Maya:
Make sure a weighting option (add, multiply, replace) and a object to weight from the list on the right is selected in the UI before hitting the 'weight it!' button.
Also added is a utility to save and load soft select tool options as presets.
