Subsurface scattering is when light enters an object, bounces around, and is either absorbed or reflected back out.

 

This shader simulates subsurface scattering by using mental ray.

 

To use, just apply the shader to any object. It looks best with lighting besides the default.

 

Is it too grainy? Go to the attribute editor of the main shader, and click lightmap. Then change the samples to 512, or even 1024.
