When autokey is on, you can't see spring in viewport. You just key your poses and animate how you wish, don't consider tail or any spring. After you finished your animation, turn off autokey then you can see spring in viewport. If this doesn't solve your problem, please capture your screen and ask me again. Thanks. -

hey there! thanks so much for the rig - it's very nice =) I have a quick question though, should I have my file set up a certain way in order to use the rig? I'm using Max 2010 and when I have autokey on the tail doesn't seem to want to follow the body smoothly like it does with it off. I tried to animate without using autokey, but after I make a change and try to key the animation it seems like nothing gets keyed =( I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, do you have any suggestions that may help? thank you! -

I understand what you mean. I used realtimespring to rig that. You can move time slider couple times back and forth to get it back to default pose. Maybe it helps better; https://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/realtime-spring -
