I will look into the default player but i think this is something you setup inside of maya ? try using the advanced options in shotView. The Weird black screen thing seems like a problem with your player - try downloading media player classic if you want full scrub ability etc..
i will look into the overscan thing too.
...a very helpful little tool! It would only be nice, if the window size would be saved, otherwise you have to retype the resolution everytime you make a preview ...
