Hi, new member - first post!

I use Maya 6.0 on SuSE 9.2, and generally have a dark-colured KDE desktop. Because of the bg being dark, the fonts are bright. This works well with all apps, except Maya doesn't have a dark UI background, but the font is bright. It seems that it uses only my font colour, but not my bg-colour.

Now, I investigated that there is a file called MayaScheme, which has to be copied into ~/maya/app-defaults/MayaScheme and the hex-codes edited to suit my needs.

I did all this, but Maya ignores the file and still uses the same colours as before. When I use another desktop environment instead of KDE (ie. Windowmaker), the UI-font uses default=black.

How do I get Maya to respect my MayaScheme settings?

cheers

Are you changing Maya's default color theme in "Window/Settings & Preferences/Colors"? This is found in the Maya UI Menu. There are requests on the Alias "User to User" Maya discussion Linux forum for a more eye pleasing UI similar to what's offered for OSX users. Basically asking Alias to have one theme for all platforms with out being a resource hog. I previously tried skinning Maya with Baghira http://baghira.sourceforge.net/ but was unsuccessful. Possibly the latest release of Baghira will allow this but haven't had time to play around with it.

Hi DK,
There is a colour settings dialogue window, but there are no tabs for the window-background or the fonts, but all other things like the 3d work area, etc.

The Maya Help files explicitly say to use the MayaScheme file in the local path. Topic = "Maya for Linux limitations"
Looks to me that this issue is exclusive to Linux

(Linux) Setting color resources

You have to set color resources manually since the SGI color schemes are not available to help set colors.

Workaround

You can use the file MayaScheme to customize the resources used. Copy the file from /usr/aw/maya/app-defaults to
  $HOME/app-defaults.

The scheme file looks like this:
...
fixedWidthFont: --fixed-medium-r-normal--13-----*-iso8859-1
smallFixedWidthFont: --clean-medium-r-normal--12-------*
*basicBackground: #4f4f4f
Maya*Background: #4f4f4f
*textForeground: #000000
*textFieldBackground: #d3b5b5
*readOnlyBackground: #bdbdbd
*buttonBackground: #bdbdbd
...

It all looks logical to me (what comes from the help files), but it doesn't work (I've already changed the hex values to red, in case it was using the current colours anyway; I've moved the file in my local path from ~/maya/ to ~/maya/app-defaults etc.
Using MayaScheme doesn't work in all desktop environments, I've tested, so it can't be an issue with KDE only.
I will monitor this thread and contribute back when I resolve that quirk

You only need to place MayaScheme in ~/app-defaults/

Sometimes, you may need to create ~/.Xdefauts also, then "xrdb ~/.Xdefaults" before start maya to get right UI colors.
An example of Xdefaults could be found on 1www.5dwm.org1.(in imd4linux.base.5dwm.beta1.tar.gz)

Here is my MayaScheme, drak grey, like shake.

cheers, cobranail! It works!! I have to admit, that I had my app-defaults folder in the Maya path, not in the user path.
I first checked the .Xdefaults, and it wasn't there. Creating one made the menu fonts in Maya black.

Thanks very much again!!

my MayaScheme is similar to yours (built on my KDE colours + SGI fonts):

I'd be curious to know what it now looks like with the mix of KDE and SGI fonts. Can you post a link to a screen shot?

Here you go:
[picture deleted]
before'n'after (composed image)

It's not the proper italic bold type from IRIX menus (although IIRC it's part of the font pack), because I wanted them space saving and antialiased. I retrieved an SGI font pack from an older SuSE distri since I couldn't find it in my 9.2.

Couldn't figure out, how to change the white font; but I'm sure it's just a small matter of geekin' around with the font list...

6 months later

can you please explain a little more in detail how did you do it?
about that .Xdefaults thing
i went to that site www.5dwm.org., but didn't understand much

thx

5 years later

5 years later, I too would be interested in a solution for this. I tried creating an empty .Xdefaults file but it did not made any difference...
